It is becoming common knowledge that the different phases of the moon have an effect on deer. This in turn has an effect on the success of your hunt. Typically all animals are more active at night and many times even more active during a full moon. Different moon phases can also affect the mating habits of deer thus making them easier to locate. If a hunters knows when the breeding season begins, he/she can more accurately determine areas where there is more deer activity. Since does becomes more active in the few days surrounding the second full moon, you can be sure that bucks also become more active. If you are able to determine when the full moon is and also locate areas of high activity, you will be sure to have a successful hunt. If you would like to know what moon phases will be occuring during hunting season, please check out this calendar:

Moon Phase Calendar

There are a total of 8 moon phases. The first is called a new moon. During this cycle the moon appears to be invisible. After a couple of days the second phase, a Waxing Cresent, occurs. At this point the moon is visible in the sky. Then the moon turns into a half moon or first quarter moon in which 1/2 of the moon is visible. When about 3/4 of the moon is showing that is known as a Waxing Gibbous. Finally it will move into a full moon which completes half the cycle. The second half of the moon cycle is the same as the first except the moon is disappearing. From the full moon, it moves into what is called a Waning Gibbous in which we see 3/4 of the moon. From there it moves into a half moon or last quarter moon. Then we see a Waning Crescent. After this we start over again with a new moon. See Diagram Below:
