The North American white-tailed deer is the North American version of Europe’s Roe Deer. Whitetail deer sizes and appearance are determined by the area in which they live, with larger whitetails living in northerly latitudes. Further south, deer are significantly smaller. Whitetails have a slender necks, athletic builds with long, lean legs, and narrow heads. Their coat are typically grayish brown in color with short, coarse hairs during the summer months that grow a little longer and a little darker during winter months. The tail is long and furry and as the name implies, is white underneath. Male whitetails, called bucks, grow antlers that are complex and have many tines growing from them. The antlers grow first upwards, then backwards, before turning again forwards and inwards above the head.

Whitetail deer are a very adaptable species in that they can live in almost any climate where there is vegetation and water. Whitetails are so well at adapting to their environment, they’ve been found to colonize urban suburbs. With the clearing of North American forests, and thinning of thick forests, deer have actually grown in numbers.

The only place in North America where whitetail deer do not reside is the Southwest, and area that does not hold enough water. Population numbers are highest in the eastern side of the Rocky Mountains, where they can be found from Canada to Florida and southwards to South America. With such wide distribution, many subspecies have developed over time.
