Red Fox
Red foxes can have a wide array of coat colors, ranging from deep reddish brown to yellow on their upper body contrasted by a white or light gray belly and chest. The lower half of their legs is usually black along with a black tip on their bushy tail. There are two unique coat colors, cross foxes which have the familiar reddish brown fur and a black strip down their back, and silver foxes with have a silver to black coat. These silver foxes are the most prized by fur processors. Red foxes, like many other canine species, have scent glands at the base of their tails. Red foxes are very much loner animals choosing to live alone most of the time instead of in a pack or with a mate. They are somewhat territorial choosing to live in a area where they can find shelter and food easily. Their dens are usually those of a rabbit or marmot that they have taken over. These dens may be dug out further to make more room for an adult or a female and her pups. Dens are sometimes used by foxes over the course of a few generations. They will follow the same routes and trails from their dens to resting areas or food sources.
Red foxes are usually active at night or in the evening hours. Pups, after being born and growing out of adolescence will move off and establish their own territories. They may move a few miles, or a few hundred miles, depending on the relation to existing foxes, competition for food, and shelter.
