Coyote Diet

Coyotes eat a very wide range of foods. Typically, they’re carnivorous where the overwhelming majority of their intake is small mammals such as rabbits, mice, rats, squirrels, and gophers. They will eat birds, if possible, and even snakes on occasion. Additionally, they’ve been known to eat large bugs and invertebrates from time to time. They prefer fresh meat though they will eat off a carcass of a dead animal.

They will eat almost anything, however, in addition to mammalian flesh. Things like plants. berries, fruits, and leaves and most annoyingly human refuse are a part of coyote diets. This characteristic allows them to live almost anywhere because of their wide range in diet habits. When hunting, a coyote will follow a scent trail and when in range, jump and land stiff-legged on their prey. This works particularly well for small game and rodents. When hunting, coyotes will work together with a badger because badgers are so well adept at digging rodents out of burrows, while the coyotes are much faster than a badger. When they work together, there is little escape for their prey.
