Coyotes are common throughout much of North and Central America having a range of anywhere north of Panama all the way up through the US and Canada. They live in Alaska and everywhere except the sub-arctic regions of Canada.

The appearance of coyotes can be anywhere from grayish brown to a yellowed gray. Their neck and stomach are often white. The head, front legs, mouth, and feet are usually a reddish brown color. Their tails have a black tip and there is a scent gland located at the base. They have a dark, almost black strip of fur running down their backs with a crossing section over their shoulders as well. They shed their coats annually typically in line with the warmer months where they’ll regrow it for cold winter months.

Coyotes are smaller than wolves are less likely to form packs than wolves. They’re larger than foxes and lead a similarly solitary life most of the time. They have pointed ears, unlike many domesticated dogs, and a coyotes ears are fairly large when compared to the size of their heads. They have a long slender muzzle as well. Their feet are fairly small for a body of their stature. Their eyes are typically yellowish and reflect light at night. They are most active at night when they are searching for food away from their dens.
