Ring-necked pheasants are fairly large upland game birds. The males and females vary greatly in terms of plumage, but they both have a strong yellow bill similar to that of a chicken. They both have short legs, their characteristic long tail feathers, and short wings.

The male will grow to be about three feet long, including their long tail feathers. Their heads are very brightly colored having colors of green and blue, even purple, and a bright white collar on their neck that distinguishes their head and neck from their body. They have a patch of skin on their face that is bright red, usually on the sides of their head and around their eyes. The shimmering green feathers grow around their ears, while the overall body color is brown with speckles of yellow, black, white, and green. Their long reddish brown tail feathers have dark brown barring. Males have a short spur on the rear of their feet as well. The female, called a hen, is a lighter colored brown, more dulled in appearance, and lacks the bright colors that the males have. She is usually about 2 feet long with a yellowish brown tail that’s about a foot long.
