Ruffed grouse are an upland bird that is usually about 18 inches long with a back that is reddish brown colored with dark spots and tan to yellow feathers on their chest. They nest on the ground, not in trees, where the female will usually lay one egg at a time until she has laid all of her eggs, unlike other bird species that lay all their eggs at once. The female ruffed grouse will lay about 11 eggs which she’ll sit on until they hatch, usually after about 3 to 4 weeks.

Ruffed grouse are birds that spend a great deal of time with their young long after hatching. The female actually helps take care of her brood until they are able to roost and stay in a tree by themselves. They are typically solitary for much of their lives, except for mating seasons when they will tend to meet up with other members of their species. Male grouse have a unique trait that has been heard by many, but truly witnessed by very few, where the male will make a drumming sound. It is thought the drumming is a call for mating as well as a challenge to another male sounded during mating seasons.
