Hungarian partridge can be found in grassy areas, free of tall cover, where the overall climate is cooler and drier. The greater the agricultural development in an area, the greater the habitat is conducive to the growth and development of partridge populations. A smaller, regularly cultivated area is ideal because of the abundance of food and likelihood for low lying cover and shelter. They can be found nesting in flat grassland, hay fields with plenty of nearby grain, and especially along fencelines where they can be near food and have a means of escape in the event of danger.

During winter months, they will live in open, relatively unprotected areas. They will burrow down and make a depression in the snow where they will leave usually only to feed during the warmer parts of a day. They may fly to fields where there is grain or seeds left over from a fall harvest. They typically do not move far from a roost spot however needing food during winter months may force them to fly farther than usual. Coveys usually are less than about 15 birds and they break up only during mating seasons.

Hungarian partridge will eat grasses, weeds, leafy vegetation, grains, nuts, and seeds. The diet of the young is made up almost entirely of bugs such as crickets and grasshoppers, however adults to not eat many insects as a part of their diet. During the spring and summer months, hens will eat mostly green leafy vegetation like small plants, grasses, and weeds while during fall months they will eat lots of weed seeds, grains, and nuts. Agriculture grains are a major source of food where fields of corn, rye, wheat, barley, and oats are grown. These food sources play a particularly important role to their survival during winter months.

Chukar are usually found in North America in western states where there is mountainous, rocky areas that have the type of habitat mixed in they need for survival. Their preferred habitat would be an area like the Great Basin with plenty of desert shrubs. They typically dwell in areas that are arid to semiarid where water might be available in varying areas. They generally can be found in areas that have plenty of cover as well as food, so open plains used for agriculture do not support chukar very well.

Attempts have been made to introduce chukar to other areas and most have proved unsuccessful, lending the idea that they are already established in ideal areas.

Things like grasses, seeds, leaves, fruits, nuts, and berries when available are all parts of their diet. Chukar typically do not live near agriculture areas, so they do not each large amounts of cultivated grains and seeds. Young chukar chicks will most eat a diet consisting of insects and bugs, while mature adults do not eat many insects. They have been known to eat locusts at times, however. Food sources near water are usually where they tend to congregate as water during summer months can become scarce.

Quail prefer grass seeds for food during fall months, and they also can be found eating a high amount of acorns, when available, from fall through to the spring. Their diet will move to eating more bugs in the spring as well as consuming leafy vegetation. Insects will be a major portion of their diet throughout their life. They will also eat fruits and berries during spring and summer months.

Quail can only eat food that is exposed on bare soil or that which is easy to get to. They do not have the ability to dig very deep for food. Many ranch or club owners will burn off overgrowth to help their quail populations reach food more adequately.

Like all other wildlife, quail require food, shelter and water to survive and reproduce. Quail are found in forest openings, open woods, fallow fields, and along the edges of cultivated fields that produce abundant food and provide adequate cover.

In south Texas, cover is of the most important factor due to the extreme heat. Since a quails body temperature ranges from 106.7F to108.5F the most comfortable ambient air temp for them is between 86F to 95F. When heat exceeds 95F quail must begin to actively get rid of heat and maintain body temp at a normal level. They do this by seeking shade, scooped out cups in the soil or other cool spots in the environment. They also dissipate heat by panting.
