Many US states consider doves to be a game bird, one that has the greatest range of territory of any game bird in North America. They can fly upwards of 40 mph making them one of the more difficult targets to hit, even for well practiced hunters. Most mourning doves are about 12 inches in length with an 18 inch wing span average.

Male mourning doves will spend most of their time in a set area in early spring. They will put on aerial displays and calls to attract a mate, with which they will spend their entire life. Unlike many bird species, male and females will mate, find for food, and migrate with one mate for life. There is not much of a difference in the appearance of male and female doves. Males have a bluish hue to their head and neck with a pinkish color on the front of their chest. Females have a brown or gray colored area on the top of their heads and neck while their chest is somewhat darker gray or brownish.
