Chukars are a mid-sized partridge game bird. The males are a little bigger than the females in terms of length and mass. Their appearance and coloration is pretty similar between sexes and they’re one of the more unique looking birds in North America. Chukars are a grayish brown color with a light colored stomach. They have a distinct black line that crosses the top of their head, eyes, and runs down their neck. Their head and chest are gray. The sides are usually lined with black and white with chestnut and the tail feathers are also chestnut colored. The bill and areas around the eyes, feet, and legs are all a dark pink, red, or crimson color. Young chukar are smaller than adults while being a more dulled gray or brown, having less brown on the sides than grown adults.

Chukars eat twice a day and usually do most of their feeding in the morning or afternoon hours. They are non-migratory and they usually only move to a different altitude in a given season to seek out more comfortable climates. They do not fly very far either, typically when frightened. They also hop across the ground and usually prefer walking or running to flying. They do covey up where they’ll have varying numbers of adults and young. They will congregate in larger numbers near water. Chukars will roost on the ground, usually not in trees, but under bushes and shrubs where the males will defend their nesting areas.
