Prairie Dog Habitat
Prairie dogs live in all three countries in North America – the United States, Canada, and Mexico. They prefer dry, grassy plains. There are five species of prairie dogs and each prefers slightly different habitat. The white-tailed, Utah, and Gunnison’s prairie dog species prefer the high desert and mountain valley regions. And because these three species live in higher altitudes, they tend to hibernate during cold winter months. The white-tailed is the most common of the higher ground species and it can be found in Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, and Montana. The Gunnison’s prairie dog can be found living in high, dry plains in the four corners region where New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, and Utah meet. The Utah Prairie dog is the least common of the high-ground and it lives in just a few places of central Utah.
