Bear Diet

Black bears eat much more plant matter for food than meat or animal matter. They eat primarily the grasses and forbs that grow in the spring. They also eat tree-born fruits during summer months, berries, nuts, leaves, and twigs. The determining factor on what a bear will eat is determined by what is available, as black bears are not active predators. Bears gorge themselves to store up a fat reserve for winter hibernation where they’re generally searching for foods higher in fats and proteins as they store up a hibernation supply of energy.
