Hunting Black Bears

Most black bears are about 5 feet in length and can vary in weight from 125lbs all the way up to 400lbs. Typically they have small eyes, a long snout, exceptional sense of smell, round ears, and large, thickly built body, and a short, stubby tail. Most black bears have a black shaggy fur coat – obviously – but genetic anomalies are found with coats being white, chocolate, brown, cinnamon, and blonde. The vast majority of black bears have a black to very dark brown coat.

Black bears can be found standing on their hind legs, however they spend most of their time on all four feet. Black bears have an interesting gate, which is the result of having to walk flat-footed. Their hind legs are also a little longer than the forelegs. Their paws contain five claws that are not able to be retracted, which are used for climbing, tearing, hunting, and digging.

Black bears have been known to can kill an adult white-tailed deer with one blow from their paw. Black bears typically begin gorging themselves during the fall season so they can put on enough weight and fat reserves to sustain them throughout a long winter hibernation period. During hibernation months, if the weather is warm enough, they may wake up and leave their dens briefly.

Black bears are usually very solitary animals, except for breeding times. They are usually shy and will avoid humans usually, except when hurt or injured, or if they’re protecting their young, or protecting themselves. They will change their range due to changes in weather or the availability of food. They eat most often in either early morning or during the evening, choosing to avoid the heat of the day and to find shade and cover.

Did you know that bears have a better sense of smell than dogs?
