Mackerel

The King Mackerel has an olive color on the back fading to silver with a rosy iridescence on the sides, fading to white on the belly. They have very small, hardly visible, loosely attached scales, and have teeth that are large, uniform, and closely spaced and flattened from side to side. They are a migratory fish and can be found in the Western Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. They are commonly found in the coastal zone from North Carolina to Brazil. King Mackerel are a medium sized fish with an a weight ranging between 5 to 30 pounds. Fish under 10 pounds show yellowish brown spots on the flanks. Their prey depends on their size, ranging from sardine-like fish, striped anchovies, cigar minnows and threadfin.
