Perch

Perch can be identified by the six to nine vertical bars on its sides and amber to bright orange colored lower fins. Female perch are not as brightly colored as male perch. They have rough scales which can be felt if rubbed or stroked from tail to head. Perch normally grow around five pounds, but most that are caught average one pound or less, anything over two pounds is considered a prize catch. They are found mainly in lakes and sometimes in impoundments of larger rivers and prefer water temperatures of 65 to 72 degrees. Perch feed most heavily during the daylight hours, primarily eating immature aquatic insects, crayfish, snails, small fish, and fish eggs.
