Gar
Gar are a long tubular shaped fish, have elongated jaws filled with long sharp teeth, and have scales which are diamond-shaped, shiny, and hard. They have swim bladders which function as lungs and most gar surface periodically to take a gulp of air. They will surface more frequently in stagnant or warm water when the concentration of oxygen in the water is low. They are quick when striking prey, but are generally a slow moving fish, and able to tolerate conditions that would kill most other fish. The length of gar varies from species to species, most gar range in the area of two feet and can weigh up to five pounds. The alligator gar species can get up to ten feet in length and weigh up to 200 pounds or more. Gar feed on smaller fish and invertebrates such as crabs, and can be found in shallow, weedy areas of lakes, rivers, and bayous, often congregating in smaller groups.
