Crappie
White crappie can be identified by the six spines on its dorsal fin. The black crappie can be identified by the seven to eight spines on its dorsal fin. The black crappie is similar in size, shape, and habits, except it is darker, with a pattern of black spots. Both white and black crappie typically weigh about five pounds, but most that are caught range from half to one pound. Crappie feed primarily at dawn and dusk on small minnows and insects, moving then into the open water or approaching the shore. Crappie are less active and favor clear, warm, highly vegetated areas of ponds, lakes, and rivers. They will concentrate around weed beds or submerged objects, such as logs or boulders.
