Bowfin

Bowfin can be identified by the very long dorsal fin which runs from mid-back to the base of the tail. They are long and cylindrical shaped and dark olive in color with lighter coloration on sides with a cream colored belly. Adult male bowfin have a black spot with a yellow to orange circular coloring surrounding on its tail fin, the color is absent in female bowfin. They have sharp teeth and will attempt to bite anyone handling them. Bowfin can reach an average length of 21 inches and a maximum length of 43 inches, and can weigh from 2.5 pounds to a maximum weight of 21.5 pounds. Bowfin feed on almost anything, but their diet consists primarily of insects, crawfish, smaller fish, and frogs. They are found in deeper water during the day and will move to shallow water at night. Bowfin can be found in places such as rivers, lakes, and swamps. During times of high water they will swim into river cutoffs and their floodplain habitats.
