Importance of Fish Conservation

Fishing laws and regulations are put in place to help conserve fish populations. Practices like overfishing put not only a specific species of fish in danger, but put all other animals that rely on that fish as a food source in danger of extinction. In order to preserve fish and other wildlife there are often restrictions put on fishermen concerning what and how much they can catch. There may also be restrictions on when you can fish for a certain species of fish.

Overfishing is not the only issue threatening to fish species today. Pollution of our water sources is a very serious threat to all wildlife. Litter is a big disturbance to the natural habitat of fish and wildlife in general, therefore it is important to always remember to clean up the area you used. Pick up your trash and try to leave the area cleaner than when you got there. Try carrying a small litter bag with you to use specifically for waste. If you see bottles or cans in the water, dispose of them properly. Even if those items sink, they are still damaging to a fish’s natural habitat.

If we all chip in, we can help keep fish populations healthy and our water sources clean.
