Nautical charts are similar to maps, except they represent coastal areas instead of places on land. Nautical charts often contain information like water depths, coastline details, and tide and current information. These charts help water vessels navigate through bodies of water safely by also pointing out any known hazards or structures. They are essential to safe water navigation and in some places required. To obtain a nautical chart of particular coastal area we recommend using a tool from NOAA.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(NOAA) is an agency created by the federal government whose sole focuses are the oceans and atmosphere. This agency monitors everything from climate and weather to coastal conditions. If you are in need of a nautical chart for a particular area, try their chart viewer online. You can find it here:

One of the most important aspects of boating safety is an individuals ability to safely navigate their water vessel through the water whether that be a jet ski, boat, or larger boat or ship. It is important to always think and be aware of other boaters, just like when you drive a car. It has been said that one of the most important rules to remember when operating a boat is “stay right”. Stay to right side when driving and when encountering another boat.

While that is a good general rule there are many other things that you should know before operating a boat or any other water vessel. The United States Coast Guard has laid out all the navigational rules that you need to know. Take a look at the rules and guidelines below for all the information you need to know.
